Despicable Me: Minion Rush
Ever since Temple Run noticed an explosion of popularity in 2011, lots and lots of similar endless running games have been developed. But, none of them stand out to be as popular as Temple Run. However it seems that Despicable me: Minion Rush, a game by Gameloft may soon change the statistics.
This endless running game has reached more than 50 million downloads on the App Store and Google Play in just one month since its release on June 13, 2013. The game has reached the number one position of the Top Free Apps on iOS in over 100 countries. So let’s take a brief look at this rapidly becoming popular game.
The game is based on an animation movie of the same name. The player poses as one of the cute little minion characters from the movie who is competing to impress his boss, super villain Gru, in order to win the title of employee of the month and the ultimately, the award for employee of the year. For this, he needs to run endlessly.
The gameplay features the familiar three-lane system, with swipes in four directions causing the player to move to the next track, jump or slide. There are bananas scattered all over the path that the player needs to collect as scores. Furthermore, there are several types of power-ups as well.
The player needs to collect all the power-ups and bananas in the path because if he runs into something, he will have to spend some of them in order to continue. The amount of bananas or tokens to be spent for continuing increases, as the levels advance.
If the player doesn’t has any bananas in such a situation, he will have to either start the level over again or buy more power-ups and bananas for real currency. Each level has a unique set of challenges and obstacles.
Graphics and Sound
The graphics and visuals are just amazing. Something is always happening in every part of the screen , while the game is on. Coming to the sound, the maniacal laughter of the Minions is truly hilarious. The sounds of the machinery are an amazing array of explosions and clanks overlayed with the nonsensical babble of the Minions.
Moreover, there is a satisfying dramatic tune to tie it all together. Although there is an option to play this with the sound off, but most of the players will love to play with the entertaining background sound on.
While playing, one can see the high scores of his friends via the leader-boards. The player can also send entertaining minion messages to their friends in order to taunt them to compete against him. The game also features many fun bonus levels featuring numerous other characters.
The Temple Run like concept makes the game quite easy to pick up. However, it is a bit challenging at the same time. Ability to interact with friends adds more fun to the game. In short, it can be said that the Temple Run fans will definitely love the game play.
The bonus rounds and additional characters make it even more exciting. However, the tokens and bananas can get quite expensive to be bought in real money. Still, the player is never forced to buy them as he can just start levels over until he gets good enough to pass them without running into obstacles.
